JMB men clash with police: 50 injured

Four people were killed and 50 others injured, 11 of them seriously, in Bagmara upazila of Rajshahi district on Eid day.

According to eye witness and local people three of the dead are said to be cadres of Bangla Bhai JMB were killed in mass beating when they tried to kill Sreepur Union Parishad chairman and Awami League leader Makbul Hossain by hurling bombs and firing at him at about 8 PM on Eid day.

Local people told The New Nation, a group of Banglabhai men forced the UP chairman to attend a function arranged by them. When he refused to go with them, the cadres attacked him with lethal weapons.

Local people came to rescue the chairman and the people attacked them. Three of the cadres died on the spot and others managed to flee.

The dead were identified as Abdur Rahman (20), son of Ershad of Roypur Koali para village under Bagmara upazila, Ibrahim (28), son of Mohammad Ali of Tegachi village under Bagmara upazilla and Zahedul Murad (23), son of Abdul Malek of Pasalla village under Adamdighi Upazila under Bogra district.

Mokbul Hossain is under-going treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.Bagmara police reached the spot later and recovered the bodies, as well as two draggers and one country made pistol.

In another incident at Taherpur of Bagmara upazila at about the same time on the Eid Day, the JMB cadres attacked Taherpur Poura Awami League leader Mahbub Hossain and his associates with bombs.

Mahbub Hossain died on the spot. Of the 26 injured persons, 11 were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Local people on protest gheroed the Bagmara police station for about 6 hours on sunday. They also called hartal at Bagmara today (Tuesday).Tension is prevailing across the Bagmara Upazilla since the incident.

UNB adds: Riot police and RAB from Rajshahi and adjacent four thanas were rushed to Bhabaniganj to bring the situation under control. Some 66 activists were taken into custody from the spot.

Police claimed that OC Golam Kibria, ASIs Monirul, Salahuddin and Jahangir, Havilder Poritosh Kumar and Cop Ershadul injured in the clash were admitted to the hospital. Earlier on Saturday Mokbul Hossain Mridha, chairman of Sripur union parishad and local Awami League leader, and six others were injured in bomb attack at about 8-30 PM alleged by a group of JMB activists.
